The 2026 ANDV Outbreak
In April–May 2026, an Andes virus (ANDV) outbreak was linked to travel aboard MV Hondius. WHO reported limited human-to-human transmission aboard the ship, without evidence of sustained transmission. On 2 July 2026, WHO said the outbreak was contained and no longer posed a public-health risk after all identified contacts completed follow-up without additional secondary cases.
WHO Disease Outbreak News DON611 reports final totals of 13 linked cases: 12 laboratory-confirmed, 1 probable, and 3 deaths.
This event prompted the creation of Hantavirus Lookout to fill the gap in accessible, centralized hantavirus intelligence.
